Wild Rice Production Business Plan

Crafting a Business Plan to Turn a Vision into Reality for Commercial Wild Rice Production

opportunity

Honouring Seine River First Nation’s (SRFN) traditional background in wild rice harvesting and taking advantage of the community’s perfect location to enter wild rice production on a commercial level. With global demand far exceeding current production, SRFN designed the opportunity to expand their smaller-scale wild rice production to bring their community one step further into sustainable economic growth.

what we did

CES was able to align existing academic research and previous studies with SRFN’s long-established knowledge about wild rice production to help the community overcome the challenges of expansion. All findings and recommendations were converted into a concise five-year projection to clearly drive SRFN toward their vision.

challenges

Identifying the suitable size and scale of production, determining the right locations for planting, defining the right type of equipment required, and establishing a small storage facility were the main challenges of planning for a sustainable operation.

results

CES prepared a detailed Business Plan to set direction for their planned expansion. The plan utilized leading research in wild rice production, along with market research, financial projections, and a realistic time-bound implementation plan to enable the community to initiate this project and move forward with their vision.
