Chesterfield Inlet community storytelling

Supporting culture preservation through digital storytelling in the Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet

opportunity

Preserving culture and language at Chesterfield Inlet to celebrate the spirit and identity of their people with all the next generations to come.

what we did

CES was hired to develop a Digital Storytelling Project to bridge the gap between Elders and Youth by sharing stories about the community and preserving them digitally. Youth were trained in interviewing and recording techniques to preserve stories from their community and have them housed on the Chesterfield Inlet website.

challenges

Engaging community members of all ages to preserve their language and culture, providing them with an easy way to connect with each other while showcasing their traditions with the world. Many stories have been lost and this project provides an opportunity to bring them back to life.

results

CES developed the My Community App Project as an initiative to provide community members of the Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet with an ongoing digital community, a space to share their stories and experiences, and celebrate their spirit and traditions which becomes a living museum for the community. The focus was on involving the community’s Youth in collecting, creating, and documenting the stories. In addition to the storytelling website, a new community website was developed which included professional photography, branding, interactive web-based technology, as well as a high-definition community video portraying a glimpse of what life in Chesterfield Inlet is all about.
