Georgina Island
Georgina Island Storytelling
Building a digital collection of stories and artifacts to share and preserving Georgina Island’s culture
opportunity
Showcasing and preserving Georgina Island First Nations’ culture and traditions through an interactive educational experience.
what we did
CES was hired by Georgina Island First Nation to design a storytelling website and kiosk that featured stories told by their community members and the creation of a digital museum that contained community artifacts and historical written articles.
challenges
Unique and irreplaceable heritable resources and stories from the community’s Elders were at risk of being lost.
results
This project preserved valuable pieces of the local history by recording the stories of community members and Elders, digitizing historical photographs and written content, and cataloguing community artifacts - creating an interactive, educational website and kiosk that was housed in the community library. This was a legacy project for the community and the librarians were trained to ensure the technology could be managed and serviced by the community, for the community. The kiosk allowed community members, students, and visitors to learn about Georgina Island's traditions, culture, and history. The community is continuing to strive to recording new stories and adding new content for years to come involving Youth, Elders, and everyone in between.
